To us it is given not only to wait ...

Exciting news from the Dao tribe! Here is Scott and Jennie’s latest newsletter.

Please be in prayer!

The literacy program is vital to the strength of a future Dao church.

“I know only one thing; Christ has not yet returned; therefore the task is not yet done. When it is done, Christ will come. Our responsibility is not to insist on defining the terms of our task; our responsibility is to complete it. So long as Christ does not return, our work is not done. Let us get busy and complete our mission....Do you love the Lord's appearing? Then you will bend every effort to take the gospel into all the world....For to us it is given not only to wait for but also to hasten the coming of the day of God. (2 Peter 3:12)"
- George Ladd

Why bother to translate the Bible if nobody can read?

"If you do not come to the literacy classes, you will not be able to read the God Talk book! And if you are not able to read the God Talk book, you will not be able to see with your own eyes the big things that God wants to say to you...You must come to the school classes and you must learn to read!" I said to the Dao people as I was translating for our New Tribes Mission literacy consultant - Sandy Mikolavich yesterday. "True, it's true! We do need to learn to read and our children also need to learn to read!" was what one Dao man named Wikipai (above right picture) excitedly said as he watched Sandy act out for us what would take place in the literacy classes in the coming months.
There is a lot of excitement and talk going around among the people about these literacy classes that will soon begin. However, one thing that we have realized as we have been talking to the Dao people about these literacy classes over the past week is that the semi-nomadic nature of the Dao people is going to pose somewhat of a challenge to the literacy program. Learning to read and write is not in the least an easy thing to do, especially since one class will take as long as three to four months to complete! The Dao people are now realizing their need to learn but they have many important cultural decisions to make as to how exactly they will go about it and so we need your prayers!

Please pray for us as we talk about these important issues with the Dao people! Pray that God would give us wisdom in conveying the importance of being able to read God's Word to a people that have yet to hear the 'God Talk' themselves. Pray that God would place in their hearts a desire to know him and to not only be able to hear His message with their ears but to be able to see and read it with their own eyes!

"Praise the greatness of the Lord, who loves to see His servants do well." -Psalm 35:27

Please continue to pray for us and the Dao people as Jennie and I move on into full time translation.
Pray that we will work in excellence and that God would be glorified.

Because He said "GO!" - Scott & Jennie Phillips - Luke 9 :60/17:10
